Bangladesh: Economy, Agriculture and Industryবাংলাদেশ: অর্থনীতি, কৃষি ও শিল্প

Introduction

The economy of Bangladesh is one of the most frequently examined areas in the General Knowledge paper of BCS, Bank, and IT-officer recruitment exams. Questions come in two flavours: (1) hard facts — the size of GDP, the growth rate, the share of each sector, the largest export, remittance totals, foreign-exchange reserves — and (2) concept questions — what a "fiscal year" is, why readymade garments (RMG) dominate exports, what LDC graduation means, or why Bangladesh is called self-sufficient in rice. This lesson gives you both: the current numbers, verified against the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and other authoritative sources, and the reasoning behind them so you can answer any twist an examiner invents.

Bangladesh is a developing, agrarian-turned-industrialising, remittance-and-export-driven economy. Understanding it means understanding three engines — agriculture (which feeds the nation and employs the most people), industry (led by RMG, which earns the most foreign currency), and services (the largest slice of GDP) — plus the money sent home by migrant workers.

Note: Bangladesh's fiscal year (FY) runs 1 July to 30 June. "FY25" or "FY2024-25" means the year ending 30 June 2025. Always read the year label carefully — exam options often differ only by the year.

Learning objectives

  • State the current size, growth rate and per-capita income of the Bangladesh economy and what each term means.
  • Explain the three-sector composition of GDP and how sector shares differ from employment shares.
  • Describe agriculture: main crops, the three rice seasons, jute the "golden fibre", tea, and fisheries, with Bangladesh's world rankings.
  • Describe industry: the dominance of RMG, other major industries, EPZ/SEZ, and why manufacturing matters.
  • Explain exports, imports, remittances, and foreign reserves and how they connect (the balance of payments intuition).
  • Define key terms: GDP, GNI, per-capita income, inflation, remittance, LDC graduation, trade deficit.
  • Solve numerical exam problems on growth rates, per-capita income, sector shares, and export ratios.
