Introduction
Phonology (Bangla: ধ্বনিতত্ত্ব / ধ্বনিবিজ্ঞান) is the branch of linguistics that studies the sounds of a language, how those sounds are organized, classified and combined, and how they are represented in writing. In Bangla grammar this topic covers বর্ণ (letters/graphemes), ধ্বনি (sounds/phonemes), the alphabet (বর্ণমালা) and উচ্চারণ (pronunciation).
For BCS, Bank and IT-officer examinations this is one of the highest-yield chapters in Bangla Language and Literature. Almost every exam asks something from here: the number of vowels and consonants, which letters are ঘোষ/অঘোষ or অল্পপ্রাণ/মহাপ্রাণ, which sounds are তালব্য or মূর্ধন্য, what অযোগবাহ বর্ণ are, and rules of pronunciation of অ, এ, ব, শ/ষ/স etc. Because the facts are fixed and countable, a student who memorizes the classification precisely can score full marks. This lesson builds that classification from first principles so the counts are not blind memorization but understood structure.
Learning objectives
- Distinguish clearly between বর্ণ (letter) and ধ্বনি (sound), and understand that Bangla script is an abugida (আবুগিদা).
- State and justify the exact counts: 11 vowels (স্বরবর্ণ), 39 consonants (ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ), 50 letters total, and 7 basic vowel phonemes (মৌলিক স্বরধ্বনি).
- Classify vowels by tongue height, backness, roundedness, and length; classify consonants by place of articulation (উচ্চারণ স্থান) and manner of articulation (উচ্চারণ রীতি / প্রযত্ন).
- Explain ঘোষ/অঘোষ (voiced/voiceless) and অল্পপ্রাণ/মহাপ্রাণ (unaspirated/aspirated) and place every stop in the 5×5 বর্গ grid.
- Identify special symbols: কার, ফলা, অযোগবাহ বর্ণ (ং ঃ ঁ), নুক্তা letters (ড় ঢ় য়), and খণ্ড ত (ৎ).
- Apply the standard pronunciation rules of Bangla (অ-এর উচ্চারণ, এ-এর উচ্চারণ, ব/শ/ষ/স, ণত্ব-ষত্ব awareness).
