Introduction
Parts of speech are the eight (some grammarians say nine) basic categories into which every word in the English language is classified according to the job it does in a sentence. Master them and you unlock almost every other grammar topic: subject-verb agreement, tenses, prepositions, transformation, correction, and fill-in-the-blanks — all of which appear heavily in BCS, Bank, and IT-officer exams.
The single most important idea in this lesson: a word is NOT permanently one part of speech. The SAME word can be a noun in one sentence and a verb in another. You must judge by function, not by the word alone. This one insight wins you the trickiest exam marks.
Learning Objectives
- Name and define all 8 parts of speech with clear intuition, not rote definitions.
- Identify the part of speech of any word by testing its function in the sentence.
- Distinguish confusable pairs: adjective vs adverb, preposition vs conjunction, pronoun vs determiner.
- Handle the classic exam trap where one word changes its class across sentences.
- Solve MCQ, fill-in-the-blank, and identification questions quickly and accurately.
