(a) What do you understand by Latency, throughput, and availability of a system?
Model answer
Latency is the total time taken for one bit (or message) to travel from sender to receiver.
Latency = Propagation time + Transmission time + Queuing time + Processing delay.
- Propagation time = distance / propagation speed.
- Transmission time = message size / bandwidth.
Throughput is the actual rate at which data is successfully delivered over the network, measured in bits per second (bps). It is not the same as bandwidth: bandwidth is the theoretical maximum capacity of the link, while throughput is what is actually achieved after accounting for congestion, errors, and protocol overhead — throughput ≤ bandwidth.
Availability is the fraction of time a system is operational and accessible to authorized users, expressed as:
Availability (%) = MTBF / (MTBF + MTTR) × 100
where MTBF = Mean Time Between Failures, MTTR = Mean Time To Repair.
Worked example: If a server has MTBF = 720 hours and MTTR = 4 hours:
Availability = 720 / (720 + 4) × 100 ≈ 99.45%
| Metric | Measures | Unit | Improved by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Latency | Delay per message | milliseconds | Shorter distance, faster links, less queuing |
| Throughput | Useful data delivered per second | bps/Mbps | Higher bandwidth, less congestion/loss |
| Availability | Uptime reliability | % | Redundancy, fault tolerance, fast recovery |
Exam takeaway: Low latency + high throughput + high availability together define a "good" network; a link can have high bandwidth yet low throughput if congested, and high throughput yet be unavailable if it fails often.
