What is software testing? Discuss effective and exhaustive testing.
Model answer
Software testing is the process of executing a program/system with the intent of finding defects and verifying that it meets specified requirements — confirming both that it does what it should ("verification") and that it does what the user actually needs ("validation").
Exhaustive testing means testing every possible input combination and execution path — theoretically the only way to guarantee zero defects, but practically impossible for any non-trivial program (e.g. a function taking two 32-bit integers has over 18 quintillion input pairs).
Effective testing instead uses risk-based, structured techniques to get the highest defect-detection value from a limited, practical number of test cases:
- Equivalence partitioning and boundary value analysis (representative inputs instead of all inputs)
- Prioritizing high-risk/high-usage areas first
- Combining black-box (requirement-based) and white-box (code-path-based) techniques
- Continuous testing integrated across the SDLC (unit → integration → system → acceptance)
| Aspect | Exhaustive Testing | Effective Testing |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | All possible inputs/paths | Representative, risk-prioritized subset |
| Feasibility | Practically impossible | Practical and standard industry practice |
| Goal | Theoretical completeness | Maximum defect detection per unit of effort |
Exam takeaway: testing can never prove the absence of bugs, only reduce their likelihood — exhaustive testing is the theoretical ideal, effective testing is the achievable, practiced discipline.

What is modulation? Why is it necessary?
Model answer
Modulation is the process of varying one or more properties (amplitude, frequency, or phase) of a high-frequency carrier signal according to a lower-frequency information/baseband signal, so the information can be transmitted over a physical medium.
Why it is necessary:
- Practical antenna size: an efficient antenna needs a length comparable to the signal's wavelength; raw baseband audio (a few kHz) would need antennas kilometers long, while modulating it onto a high-frequency carrier (MHz-GHz) allows antennas just centimeters to meters long.
- Multiplexing multiple signals: shifting different baseband signals onto different carrier frequencies lets many stations/users share the same medium (e.g. different radio stations) without interfering with each other.
- Long-distance transmission: high-frequency carriers propagate through the atmosphere/medium far more efficiently, with less attenuation, than raw baseband signals.
- Noise immunity: some modulation schemes (e.g. FM, digital modulation) are far more resistant to noise than sending baseband signals directly.
Types (brief): Amplitude Modulation (AM), Frequency Modulation (FM), Phase Modulation (PM) for analog signals; ASK, FSK, PSK for digital data.
Exam takeaway: modulation means "loading information onto a carrier" — it exists to make transmission practical (antenna size), efficient (multiplexing), and reliable (noise resistance) for signals that otherwise could not travel far or share a medium in raw baseband form.

Imagine a scenario where new child classes are introduced frequently from a basic class. The method calling sequences for every child class are the same but the implementation is different among the child classes. Here which design pattern would you like to apply?
