Introduction to Computers and Their Generations
A computer is the single most important machine of the modern age, and almost every government job examination in Bangladesh — BCS (both preliminary and written), Bank (Officer / Senior Officer), and IT-officer / Assistant Programmer posts — opens its Computer/ICT section with this topic. Questions on what a computer is, its characteristics, its functional units, its history, and above all its five generations appear year after year, often as one-mark multiple-choice items where a single date, inventor's name, or the underlying electronic component decides the answer. This lesson builds the topic from first principles so that you not only memorise the facts but truly understand why each generation is defined the way it is.
Learning objectives
By the end of this lesson you should be able to:
- Define a computer precisely and explain the Input–Process–Output–Storage (IPOS) cycle.
- Distinguish data from information, and state the key characteristics of a computer (speed, accuracy, diligence, versatility, storage, automation) along with its limitations (GIGO, no IQ).
- Draw and label the block diagram of a computer and explain the role of each functional unit (input, memory, ALU, control unit, output) in the von Neumann architecture.
- Classify computers by working principle (analog, digital, hybrid) and by size/capacity (super, mainframe, mini, micro).
- Trace the history of computing devices from the abacus to UNIVAC and name the key inventors.
- Describe the five generations of computers — the defining electronic component, period, languages, example machines, and merits/demerits of each.
- State and apply Moore's Law and convert between computer speed and memory units.
