What is Deadlock? Explain two situations where deadlock condition occurs.
Model answer
Deadlock is a state in which two or more processes are each waiting indefinitely for a resource held by another process in the same set, so none of them can ever proceed.
Four necessary conditions (Coffman conditions) — all must hold simultaneously:
- Mutual Exclusion — a resource can be held by only one process at a time.
- Hold and Wait — a process holding at least one resource is waiting to acquire additional resources held by others.
- No Preemption — a resource cannot be forcibly taken away; it must be released voluntarily.
- Circular Wait — a closed chain of processes exists, each waiting for a resource held by the next.

Two classic situations where deadlock occurs:
- Resource-allocation deadlock: Process P1 holds a printer and requests a scanner; Process P2 holds the scanner and requests the printer — each waits forever for the other's resource (diagram above).
- Database transaction deadlock: Transaction T1 locks row A then requests row B; simultaneously Transaction T2 has already locked row B and requests row A — both transactions block on each other's locked row.
Handling strategies (brief): deadlock prevention (deny one of the 4 conditions), avoidance (Banker's Algorithm), detection & recovery, or the ostrich algorithm (ignore it, used by most general-purpose OSes).
Exam takeaway: deadlock requires all 4 Coffman conditions together; breaking even one — most commonly circular wait, via resource ordering — prevents it.
