Written question 1Networking

Explain NAT? Differenc between IPv4 and IPv6.

Model answer

NAT (Network Address Translation): a technique, usually run on a router/gateway, that translates private (internal) IP addresses into a public (external) IP address (and back again) as traffic crosses the network boundary.

  • Lets many devices on a private LAN (e.g., 192.168.x.x) share a single public IP to reach the Internet, conserving scarce public IPv4 addresses.
  • Also adds a layer of security by hiding internal network topology/addressing from the outside world.
  • The router maintains a NAT translation table mapping (private IP:port) to (public IP:port) for each active connection.
graph LR
    P1["192.168.1.10"] --> R["Router - NAT"]
    P2["192.168.1.11"] --> R
    R -->|Single public IP: 203.0.113.5| I((Internet))

Difference between IPv4 and IPv6:

Feature IPv4 IPv6
Address length 32 bits 128 bits
Address space ~4.3 billion ~3.4x10^38
Notation Dotted decimal (192.168.1.1) Colon hex (2001:db8::1)
Header Variable length, has checksum Fixed 40-byte base header, no checksum (faster routing)
Address configuration Manual/DHCP DHCPv6 or stateless auto-config (SLAAC)
Built-in security Optional (IPsec add-on) IPsec built in
Need for NAT Widely required (address shortage) Rarely needed (abundant address space)

Exam takeaway: NAT lets multiple private-IP devices share one public IP (mitigating IPv4 exhaustion); IPv6's 128-bit space is large enough that NAT becomes largely unnecessary.

Written question 5Networking

Distinguish between Synchronous and Asynchronous transmission.

Model answer

Answer:

Aspect Synchronous Transmission Asynchronous Transmission
Timing Sender and receiver share a common clock; data sent in continuous, timed blocks/frames No shared clock; each character sent independently, whenever ready
Framing Data grouped into large frames/blocks with sync bits at intervals Each byte/character wrapped individually with start and stop bits
Overhead Low overhead (one sync per block) Higher overhead (start/stop bits per character)
Speed Faster for large data volumes Slower (more control-bit overhead per unit)
Example use Network backbones, high-speed data transfer (leased lines) Keyboards, serial mice, older modems (UART communication)
graph LR
    B1[Sync] --> D1[Data block] --> D2[Data block]
graph LR
    ST[Start bit] --> CH[Character bits] --> SP[Stop bit]
  • Synchronous: relies on clock synchronization (via a separate clock signal or embedded clocking) so both ends know exactly when each bit begins/ends — efficient for continuous high-volume streams.
  • Asynchronous: trades efficiency for simplicity — every character is self-contained (start bit, data bits, optional parity, stop bit), so no shared clock is required, at the cost of extra bits per character.

Exam takeaway: synchronous = clock-synchronized, low-overhead, block-based (fast, used for bulk data); asynchronous = self-framed per character with start/stop bits (simpler, higher overhead, used for low-speed serial links).
