Two separate questions describe a link. Serial vs parallel says how the bits travel: serial sends one bit after another over a single path, parallel sends several bits at once over several wires. Simplex, half-duplex and full-duplex say which way the data may flow. Because these classifications are independent, serial transmission can be used in every direction mode:
- Simplex: one direction only, as in broadcast radio or television.
- Half-duplex: both directions, one at a time; a two-wire RS-485 bus uses one signal pair, so sending and receiving happen at different times.
- Full-duplex: both directions at once; a four-wire RS-485 bus gives each direction its own pair.
Why the other options are wrong
- (a) Duplex: Serial links do run full-duplex, but not only full-duplex.
- (b) Half Duplex: True of some serial links, but it leaves out the simplex and full-duplex ones.
- (c) Simplex: Also possible, but serial links are not limited to one-way traffic.
Tip: Serial/parallel = how bits are sent; simplex/half/full duplex = which way data flows. Any combination is possible.
