How many bits are there in Unicode?
- a)8
- b)12
- c)16 (correct answer)
- d)20
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: (c) 16
Unicode was designed as a 16-bit character code: 2¹⁶ = 65,536 possible characters, far more than the 128 of 7-bit ASCII or the 256 of an 8-bit code page. Version 1.0 (1991) and the versions up to 1995 were pure 16-bit encodings, and "16-bit" is the figure exam papers expect. Its 16-bit range is today called the Basic Multilingual Plane, which covers most modern scripts, including Bangla.
Why the other options are wrong
- (a) 8: that is ASCII/extended ASCII, or the size of one UTF-8 code unit, not Unicode's character size.
- (b) 12: no Unicode form uses 12 bits.
- (d) 20: 2²⁰ = 1,048,576 is only the number of supplementary code points (U+10000 to U+10FFFF), not the size of the whole code space.
Tip: ASCII = 7 bits; extended ASCII = 8 bits; Unicode = 16 bits (classic exam answer).
Exam note: The paper expects the original 16-bit design. As of October 2026, Unicode has not been a 16-bit code since Unicode 2.0 (1996): its code space runs from U+0000 to U+10FFFF (1,114,112 code points), which needs 21 bits, and it is stored as UTF-8, UTF-16 or UTF-32. If the question reappears with these options, choose (c) 16.
