A transformer transforms ______.
- a)Frequency
- b)Voltage
- c)Current
- d)Voltage and Current (correct answer)
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: (d) Voltage and Current
A transformer works by mutual induction: the alternating current in the primary sets up an alternating flux in the core, and that same flux induces a voltage in the secondary.
- Voltage follows the turns ratio: Vs ÷ Vp = Ns ÷ Np.
- In an ideal transformer, power in = power out, so Vp × Ip = Vs × Is, which gives Is ÷ Ip = Np ÷ Ns.
- Example: a 10 : 1 step-down transformer turns 2,300 V into 230 V, and the secondary current is 10 times the primary current.
So whenever the voltage is changed, the current is changed in the inverse ratio: a transformer transforms both.
Why the other options are wrong
- (a) Frequency: The secondary voltage is induced by the same core flux, so it alternates at exactly the supply frequency; a transformer cannot turn 50 Hz into 60 Hz.
- (b) Voltage: True but incomplete; the current changes along with it.
- (c) Current: Also incomplete; the current changes only because the voltage is changed by the turns ratio.
Tip: Transformer: V and I change (inversely), power and frequency stay the same (ideally).

Which of the following is a digital modulation technique?
- a)DM
- b)PCM
- c)PSK (correct answer)
- d)All
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: (c) PSK
In data communication, digital modulation means using digital data to vary an analog carrier wave: ASK (amplitude), FSK (frequency), PSK (phase) and QAM (amplitude and phase). PSK sends bits by changing the carrier's phase; e.g. BPSK uses 0° and 180° for 1 bit per symbol, and QPSK uses four phases for 2 bits per symbol.
PCM and DM work in the other direction: they take an analog signal and turn it into a bit stream (analog-to-digital conversion). No carrier is involved.
Why the other options are wrong
- (a) DM: Delta modulation is an analog-to-digital method that sends 1 bit per sample (step up or step down); it is waveform coding, not carrier modulation.
- (b) PCM: Samples, quantizes and encodes an analog signal; it is the standard analog-to-digital method, not carrier modulation.
- (d) All: Wrong, because DM and PCM are not digital modulation schemes in this sense. Some courses group PCM and DM under "digital pulse modulation", but "digital modulation technique" normally means keying a carrier.
Tip: "Keying" (ASK, FSK, PSK) = digital modulation; PCM and DM = digitizing an analog signal.
